Dosage, Poison, and Toxic - TOXICOLOGY.

Dosage, Poison, and Toxic.

These are the three terms that can describe our topic for today which is about
TOXICOLOGY.

Figure 1:

But before we start, what does these three words really are? What is the relationship of these in toxicology? Does it really matter to know it? Well, YES.

Now let us first define these three words.

Figure 2:

Dosage is an administration of a therapeutic agent in a prescribed amount.

Poison is used to describe any harmful substances.

Toxic is an acting as or having the effect of a poison.

These three words will make up the word Toxicology. While I was reading about toxicology, there is a sentence that describes it, and says:

"Everything is poison, there is poison in everything. Only the dose makes a thing not a poison."

Or to make it shorter “All Substances are poisonous, they just vary in their dosage.” Or the “Dose makes the poison”.

This aphorism is come from Paracelsus, the Father of Toxicology.

This explains that any substances can‘t be poisonous especially to humans, if these substances are taken properly. These does not only refer to Foods, Medicines but also to Chemicals. And the word Dosage enters here.

Dosage, really have had the great responsibility especially in toxicology. This refers to the quantity that may take or may absorb by the body. It can be Food or Medicines, and each of these especially in Medicines is when taken more than the required dose can lead to overdose.

Now, how about in food? Does it also need dosage? Can it be poisonous? Well, it can be. How?

According to, Brownell is a Yale professor and director of the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale. He terms the word “toxic” if the person’s body is having an exposure to high-calorie and readily has the access to foods. Where in instead of taking exercise, you’re just in front of the TV watching while eating, or eating some unhealthy foods like in fast foods, where the foods are too much in calories.

Foods can be toxic to us, how? Well, it can be toxic if it’s not properly prepared, or processed. Dosage is also important especially in food but can be toxic. Examples of these are the usage of additives like MSG’s and DES (Diethylstilbestrol) and these are POISONS.

Maybe some of you may usually hear some news about food poisoning right? This is not really about that you will put some chemicals in the foods or drinks, although these might be the reason also. But it also talks about how the foods are processed.

Some can lead to be a cancer agents, like DES one example of food additives that can cause cancer in the uterus, breasts, and other reproductive organs. And these can be TOXIC to our body. These additives can be dangerous if the proper amount of it are added to much.

From the three words we describe earlier what do it really tells? Some may say it talks about drugs and its relationship to dosage.

TOXICOLOGY
is the study of the adverse effects of chemicals on humans and the relationship between dose and its effects on exposure.
